I found an online printing and read the first chapter and was very intrigued. I got the book from the library and, so far, I've not been able to put it down. I'll let you know what I think when I finish. This is not a vampire story!AJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02404486014359794886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6331135384154117296.post-88380953802220642012011-03-08T04:01:55.308+00:002011-03-08T04:01:55.308+00:00I can understand that, Bill. Personally I found the inclusion of vampires quite intriguing and rather daring considering the baggage which the name carries these days.

It has occurred to me before that since vampires have evolved into romantic fantasy figures for teenage girls, the Blood Transfusion Service are missing a trick - they should park their recruitment vehicles outside cinemas where these films are playing...Anthony G Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00798830903236765181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6331135384154117296.post-58135853976172824582011-03-08T02:22:17.972+00:002011-03-08T02:22:17.972+00:00Tony, I can accept almost any premise in a SF nove...Tony, I can accept almost any premise in a SF novel, but this one might challenge that. Vampires? And not just that, but vampires who suffer seizures at the sight of a right angle? It really doesn't sound appealing.

And then there's the fact that it's not an easy read. Plus your last sentence (I do prefer optimism in my fiction). All in all, I don't think I need bother with this one.

Thanks for the review!Bill Garthrighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08552459555883204060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6331135384154117296.post-41240039740645681092011-03-06T00:36:00.203+00:002011-03-06T00:36:00.203+00:00I wouldn't worry on that account, Michael. I have a vague recollection of having read Dracula many decades ago, but that's been my sole experience of vampires in print or on screen, so you can tell that I'm not exactly an enthusiast.

However, from what I understand of the way in which vampires are treated in the genre these days, Watts' treatment could not be more different. It's probably simpler to think of his version as advanced predatory aliens, rather unwilling allies who are kept in check by drugs.Anthony G Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00798830903236765181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6331135384154117296.post-70842011156687082112011-03-05T19:19:31.112+00:002011-03-05T19:19:31.112+00:00I'm so sick of vampires.
